Abstract

Assessment of the knowledge gained by the learners is an important component of the educational process. The main purpose of education is not only the transfer of knowledge and traditions but also the continuous improvement of the ability to understand the world. The assessment as an educational tool should stimulate this aspiration towards improvement by assessing the past and constructing the better future. The following basic functions of the assessment are highlighted in the article: information, feedback, correction, motivation, self-esteem and ambitions formation, personal growth, monitoring, improvement of teaching methods, group dynamics and stratification. They are interdependent and all have dysfunctional risks that can lead to educational resistance. In order to avoid the latter, the rating should be used as a positive rather than a negative sanction in the educational system.
