The paper is devoted to the American literature at the beginning of the 20th century. The trend of critical realism and the genre of social novel are studied here. The paper is organized on the basis of comparison between the three authors – Theodore Dreiser, John Steinbeck and Sinclair Lewis. The latter is always in the centre of the analysis as highlighted in the title.
