The paper is devoted to the functional interpretation of special questions in academic discourse, particularly in lectures. To stress the importance of the extralinguistic reality for the interpretation of pragmatic meaning the analysis of the questions is conducted within a wider context. It has been shown that special questions have the function of contributing to the discourse continuity by the elimination of the possible barriers on the way of discourse development.
