In many languages the main ways of word-formation are derivation, abbreviation and word-compounding. The paper studies the substantivization of adjectives in Armenian, Russian, Latin and English. The latter are examined as standard phenomena and as one of the ways of realization of the main functions of language; several classifications are suggested. It is stated, that in the case of non-linear word-formation the substantivization of adjectives depends on some specific features, characteristic of the grammatical structure of these languages.
