Abstract

The research touches upon the use of emoticons in the virtual environment. Emoticons, being one of the crucial components of electronically mediated discourse, may carry out a wide range of functions. In Electronically Mediated Communication (EMC), emoticons substitute both paralinguistic and non-verbal means and governed by the communicative situation can express different connotative meanings. In the broad sense of the word, emoticons and Graphics Interchange Format (GIFs) convey the interlocutors’ emotional state.
