The paper is dedicated to the prominent thinker, writer J. L. Borges's reference to the Japanese cultural tradition in literature, its plots and characters, as well as the Japanese version of Buddhism, which is widespread in the East, the philosophical understanding of Zen-Buddhist teachings. The great Argentine writer and culturologist J. L. Borges touches upon a number of main motives of Japanese culture, such as the emotional layers of poetry, modern stylistic features, episodes of the epic past, psychological depth, honour, etc.
