The paper deals with the communicative method in teaching Spanish. The extensive use of the method is connected with the significant changes which took place in different linguistic disciplines, whereby the initial perception of language as a system of rules was gradually replaced by language being perceived as a communicative system, attaching importance to its functional and communicative aspects. The research is based on the study of various Spanish textbooks which, being based on the communicative method, highlights the role of the communicative-grammatical methodology in developing textbooks for teaching Spanish as a foreign language.
