The paper discusses the concept of language interference and its role in the process of foreign language acquisition. It highlights different perspectives of Russian, Armenian and Western scholars related to the issue of intralingual interference. Further, the major classifications of language interference are presented taking into consideration its origin, direction, type of manifestation as well as the part of speech it belongs to.
It is claimed that in the methodology of teaching English it is far more effective and meaningful to consider language interference according to the parts of speech it belongs to from the perspective of overcoming students’ interlingual difficulties.
